End Stage Alcoholism - Critical Point in Alcohol Addiction

!: End Stage Alcoholism - Critical Point in Alcohol Addiction

Chronic alcoholism is a serious medical condition that can be lethal if left unchecked. It is spread over three stages. Alcoholics may recover safely and with minimal bodily harm in the first two stages. If still allowed to further worsen into end stage alcoholism, or the last and worst stage, the excessive amounts alcohol in the body can claim the life of the alcoholic in a painful death.

Alcoholism is primarily characterized by an increasing frequency and a gradual rise in the amount of alcohol consumption and dependence. In early stage alcoholism, alcoholic drinks provide an individual with a soothing sensation that lightens his mood, or an escape from an emotional crash. Middle stage alcoholism depicts the alcoholic as losing control of how much is his alcohol intake in order to feed his imagined need. Alcohol consumption has begun to pick up and there is an increase in regularity. The liver is now starting to be overwhelmed in breaking down the increased amount of alcohol. Alcohol has started to affect other organs as well.

End stage alcoholism is where the craving to drink alcoholic beverages has taken over the individual. To the alcoholic, consuming alcoholic drinks is equal to or more important than eating meals or drinking water. They exhibit extreme physical withdrawal symptoms. Work, finance, family, and social relations will have seriously deteriorated. The liver is unable to do its work of filtering harmful toxins. The alcoholic will have been suffering from cirrhosis of the liver. He is also now undernourished. Organs that digest food and transmit important nutrients are damaged, affecting the heart and the brain. These organs will be unable to recover if alcohol intake is continuous. Thus, this last stage is fatal.

Dementia caused by alcohol is one of the symptoms of this final stage. Memory loss, mental confusion, psychomotor difficulties, and mind and body coordination is affected. Liver, heart, and brain damage are irreversible. Still, alcoholics at end stage alcoholism can be treated, albeit permanent injuries will remain. End stage alcoholics who will recover cannot go back to a normal and full life.

About Teen Alcoholism Treatment

!: About Teen Alcoholism Treatment

Teen alcoholism treatment is designed to address the unique issues of teen alcohol abusers. Unlike adults, minor teens can be compelled to enter treatment whether they want it or not. This can create feelings of abandonment or resentment. Resentment is often stronger than denial for teen alcoholics.

Alcohol treatment programs for teens are designed around the unique characteristics of teenagers and young adults. Teenagers may not be physically mature. Depending on their age, they can still be in puberty. Since their brains are still developing, excessive alcohol use is often more addictive and damaging than similar use in adults. Treatment solutions must address these issues for the teenager to become sober.

Teen alcoholics have stronger emotions that interfere in treatment. Teens do not like to be singled out for any reason. While drinking may seem cool, being labeled an alcoholic is not. As a result, teens are more likely to resist treatment. Teen alcohol treatment programs are sensitive to this. They are able to work with teens at various emotional levels.

Upon entering the treatment program, the teen is assessed to determine health conditions, psychological problems, and underlying issues that need to be addressed. A customized plan is created to help the teen recognize problems and develop tools to address them. It is not uncommon for teen alcoholics to be victims of abuse, low achievers in school, or have eating disorders. Alcohol treatment programs help identify these concerns and provide counseling. The program may refer the teen to appropriate outside agencies.

If the teen is having problems at home, individual counseling is available. Family counseling is usually provided but can hinder the teen's recovery. The teen needs to have a voice and may not feel heard by the family. Sometimes being able to say what they want to say in a confidential setting moves the teen faster towards sobriety.

The treatment program develops an aftercare plan for the teen. Aftercare is likely to include participation in AA meetings. Alcohol recovery support is best in peer groups. Teens should not attend adult alcohol treatment programs. The needs of teens and adults are very different and should be treated accordingly.

Teen alcoholism treatment has evolved into a very specialized option for teens and families. With the right supports, teens begin to feel in control and comfortable with themselves again. This allows them to seriously think about their future. It can make them want sobriety above all else.
